LIU Post SGA held a breakout session at the SGA Conference hosted by NYIT. Our leaders shared our ideas on policy reform and distributed our SGA Constitution to support fellow student governments across the region in strengthening their internal systems for future growth.
Resident Assistants and Orientation Leaders used to be locked into one combined role. SGA changed it. The roles are now separate and open individually. Creating more access to OL positions and opportunities for commuters.
The SGA also advocated for a new Desk Attendant work study position instead of RAs fulfilling that role, and the administration agreed.
We also alleviated stress from RAs by advocating for shorter trainings for returning staff, a streamlined hiring process with fewer interviews, and earlier hiring decisions before finals week.
SGA stood up for Musical Theatre students in need of production lab credits. We raised the concerns to the Dean and VP of Student Affairs and created a student-oriented solution. Through our efforts, we advocated for:
More student roles and understudy opportunities.
Student-only performances in the future, with no outside actors.
A promise of more student-first decision making moving forward.
SGA advocated for the expansion of Career Services so students have better access to internships, job preparation, and professional guidance.
We pushed for a dedicated career services office, separate from the Alumni Relations office that it was combined with.
As a result, the administration committed to creating a dedicated Career Services office and establishing a real presence in Hillwood.
After the demolition of the Alumni Building, SGA advocated for more accessible event spaces on campus.
We worked with the administration to ensure students would not lose opportunities to host events and bring organizations together.
As a result, the administration committed to:
Renovating the Chapel as a new premier event space.
Opening the Roosevelt School as a permanent student event space.
Allowing students to have access to book the Tilles Atrium if available.
Through advocacy and collaboration with campus administration, the Student Government Association helped fix and upgrade campus WiFi infrastructure. These improvements enhanced connectivity across campus, supporting academics, student life, and day-to-day campus operations. For more positive change, SGA continues to encourage students to share feedback and ideas on how we can help improve campus life through our concern form.
Through the efforts of the Student Government Association, additional security cameras were installed across campus to improve visibility and monitoring. These upgrades strengthened overall campus safety by deterring incidents, supporting quicker response times, and helping students feel more secure in their daily campus life.
When winter weather hit, SGA pushed for a campus closure to keep students safe.
We advocated, worked with university leadership, and made sure students had the day off.
Sometimes student government means policy changes. Sometimes it means making sure everyone gets a snow day.
SGA advocated for third-party mold testing in Brookville Hall to ensure student housing meets proper safety standards.
We worked with the administration to make sure student concerns were taken seriously and independently verified.
As a result of our advocacy:
Brookville Hall was tested by a third party
Student housing conditions were properly and thoroughly reviewed
The Student Government Association played a key role in expanding campus athletic facilities by advocating for the addition of three new athletic fields. This investment promotes campus engagement and better supports athletic programs and student organizations.
The SGA created another all new branch of government, the Judicial Board. This branch interprets and safeguards the SGA Constitution and allows for a review process when decisions are made. It ensures integrity in our governance and allows students to ask their senators to appeal decisions if there is reason to believe that the rules weren't followed appropriately.
The SGA created an all new branch of government, the House of Representatives. This branch incorporates existing organizations on campus, such as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, InterFraternity Council, and Panhellenic Council as well as branch new organizations that SGA established. These include the Resident Student Council, Commuter Student Council, and International Student Council. All of these organizations work together in the House of Reps to ensure every student's voice from every niche on campus is heard on campus and issues are resolved accordingly.
The SGA advocated for the implementation of a tracker on the shark shuttle so students can see where it is at all times. Download the LIU Connect App and Click Shark Shuttle to locate the bus.
The SGA advocated for the implementation of a campus-wide Bike Program that students can use to get from place to place on campus. This program is coming soon to campus.
The SGA worked with administration to open up a brand new Residence Life Gym on campus located in Riggs Hall. Don't let the name fool you, the gym is open to all students on campus! Since the athletes dominate the gym in Pratt, this is a way for all students to have access to a gym on campus, free of charge.

After the tragic passing of Dr. William Krause on campus, the SGA recognized a need for an increase in Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on campus, as well as signage for where they are located. We worked tirelessly through our Student Safety Committee to meet with campus officials to add 26 AEDs to campus.
The Career Bar used to consist of a single computer and a single printer. The SGA has advocated for better use of the space. After conversations with administration, the Career Bar now has several additional desktop computers and an additional printer. We were able to get a printer added to the Rigg's BlueFit Gym as well. We are constantly advocating for additional printers to be placed around campus.
(Career Bar has now moved to behind the Concierge Desk and is now called the Student Business Center)
After hearing several concerns about Food issues on campus, the SGA Campus Quality Committee advocated for the implementation of the Food Committee. The SGA holds Food Committee meetings monthly to go over any food-related issues on campus with the Dining Services Company and the LIU Administration. We believe the new Dining Services Company will exceed the expectations of students!
The LIU SGA has partnered with SGAs across the state for a united effort to promote mental health on college campuses. We have passed a resolution calling for the amendment and subsequent enactment of the proposed Student Suicide Prevention Act (SSPA), a state bill currently under review in the New York State Legislature.
The SGA co-hosted a leadership conference Spring 2024 where dozens of SGAs across Long Island and New York State met at Stony Brook. We talked about the Metal Health Act and collaborated to share ideas on how we are helping students at our universities.
